(Faiz Ahmed Faiz)
Quick Facts
Faiz Ahmad Faiz is often remembered as the voice of resistance in Urdu poetry. Born in Sialkot in 1911, the same city that gave birth to Allama Iqbal, Faiz grew up in an intellectually rich environment. His father was a respected lawyer and scholar who kept the house full of books, poetry, and conversations that shaped young Faiz’s worldview.
He studied English and Arabic literature at Government College, Lahore, and then pursued a Master’s in philosophy. He taught for a while, then served in the British Indian Army during World War II, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. But poetry kept calling.
After Partition, Faiz became the editor of The Pakistan Times and later one of the most influential literary figures in the country. His verses carried the heartbeat of the oppressed, the poor, and those longing for justice. Poems like "Hum Dekhenge", "Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat", and "Bol" became anthems for protest movements, not only in Pakistan but across the world.
In 1951, Faiz was arrested in the Rawalpindi Conspiracy Case, accused of plotting a coup against the government. He spent four years in prison, where he wrote some of his most powerful poetry. Even behind bars, his words remained gentle, filled with hope, and grounded in humanity.
Faiz was married to Alys George, a British-born woman who stood beside him through thick and thin. She converted to Islam and took the name Alys Faiz. Together, they raised two daughters. Alys was his anchor and often helped him type and edit his work. Their partnership was built on shared ideals of justice and equality.
Though he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union, Faiz always said he belonged to no nation or party, he belonged to the people. His poetry continues to echo in protests, classrooms, and hearts even today.
Faiz wasn’t just a poet. He was a gentle revolutionary. One who believed that even in darkness, poetry could light the way.

baaqi hai
aap se dil laga ke
dekh liya
what else is
left to be seen
giving my heart to you
i have seen it all

dard-e-dil, saaqi
talkhi-e-mai ko
tez-tar kar de
it is sharper today
the pain of my heart
strengthen the wine
oh cup-bearer

maqaam, faiz, koyi raah mein
jacha hi naheen
jo koo-e-yaar se nikle
to soo-e-dar chale
no station, faiz, seemed
appealing along the way
those who left the beloved's lane
walked straight to the gallows

raat yun dil mein
teri khoyi hui yaad aayi
jaise veerane mein
chupke se bahaar aa jaaye
in the middle of the night
lost memories of you came to mind
like in a barren desert
silently, the spring arrived

haule se chale baad-e-nasim
jaise beemar ko
be-wajh qaraar aa jaaye
like the gentle breeze
flowing through the deserts
like how the sick
unexpectedly get relief

daaman mein chupaaye baithe ho
sheeshe ka maseeha koyi nahin
kya aas lagaaye baithe ho?
picking some scraps of glass
and hiding them in your clothes
there is no savior in these trinkets
what hope are you holding on to?

ho mohtaseeb ki khair
uncha hai usi ke naam se
rind ka saaqi ka mae ka
khum ka paemaane ka naam
may god (or critics) be blessed
it is because of them
the drunkard, wine-pourer, wine
cask and goblet have gained fame

dawa kyun nahi dete
tum acche maseeha ho
shifa kyun nahi dete
the restless have fallen sick
why don’t you offer a medicine
you are such a good healer
why don’t you cure their illness

hum un se rishta-e-dil
ustuvaar karte rahe
i never complained about
the separation for this reason
i kept nurturing this
relationship of the heart with her

jaa rahi hai zindagi?

guzarni hai yahan
why is life teaching me
so many lessons?
how many ages am I
going to spend here?

aur bhi dukh hain zamaane mein
mohabbat ke siva
rahatein aur bhi hain
wasl ki raahat ke siva
there are other sorrows
in this life than love’s longing
there are other comforts too
than the union with the beloved

jo chaho lagado dar kaisa
agar jeet gaye to kya kahna
haaray bhi to baazi maat nahi
if the gamble is of love
bet what you want, why fear
if you win, nothing like it
even if you lose, it is not a loss
