Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh)
Mohammad Nooh, widely known by his pen-name “Nooh Narvi,” was born in 1878 in Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh. He had early education at home and later learned Arabic and Persian under Mir Najaf Ali. He also acquired proficiency in English.
Nooh was a disciple of the Urdu poet Dagh Dehlvi, and after Dagh’s demise, he is considered one of his successors in style and approach. Nooh’s poetry is praised forits promptness of expression and for maintaining the dignity of language in the classical Urdu tradition.
His poetic collections include Safeena-i-Nuh, Toofan-e-Nuh, and Aijaz-e-Nuh. These works show his creativity in using his pen-name (“Nuh” or “Nooh”) in creative ways, both in phrases and in titles.
His themes include love, longing, separation, and the effects of calamity and disaster. His love poetry is noted for expressing inner feeling with freshness and individual appeal.
Nooh Narvi’s style combines formal structure (meter, rhyme) with emotive power. His language remains graceful, polished, and ethical, reflecting his master’s influence, yet he makes his own voice felt.
He passed away in 1962. His works continue to be read and appreciated in Urdu literary circles for their lyrical beauty, clarity, emotional depth, and for keeping alive a tradition of refined classical Urdu poetry.
