Umar Ansari was born on 23 September 1912 in Lucknow. He graduated from the University of Lucknow and later served as editor in chief of various newspapers and literary journals. He also held a key role as controller of production at Babul and worked in film lyric writing for productions such as Sohni and Maahiwal.
He began writing poetry around 1930. His creative output includes poetic collections such as Jaras-e-Kaarwaan, Baazgasht, Saz-e-Bekhudi, Sanam Kada, Tarana-e-Naat, Naqsh-e-Dawam, Kasheed-e-Jaan, and Kulliyat-e-Umar Ansari. His work spans genres including ghazal, nazm, naat, and prose forms such as short stories and critical essays. He explored different modes of poetic expression across Urdu literature.
In 1985, the U.P. Urdu Academy recognized his contributions to literature with a prestigious award and a monetary prize. Umar Ansari continued to be an active figure in Urdu literary circles until his passing on 18 November 2005 in Lucknow.
